The Guide to What Happens After You File Your VA Disability Claim?

We’ve often discussed this, and even other veteran consulting services will tell you the same – the VA claims process isn’t easy and requires patience. It’s one of those things that has a lengthy waiting period associated with it, and may at times have a not-so-positive outcome! So, in this post, we’d discuss the process and explain everything that happens – the process that runs in the background, after you file your claim.

How long does it take the VA to make a decision?

Well, as mentioned earlier, the process is rather time-consuming. In fact, the VA claims department took about 82 days on an average to complete disability-related claims in December 2019.

The amount of time required to review the VA claim depends on a couple of factors. These include:

  1. The type of claim
  2. The number of disabilities/ injuries claimed in the claim and their complexities
  3. The time it takes to gather the evidence needed to make the decision

What should claimants do when they’ve filed for the VA disability claim?

Veterans who’ve filed their VA disability claim (be it themselves or via any veteran consulting service), need not do anything unless otherwise advised by the authorities. If an examination is scheduled, be sure not to miss it. For those who wish to check the status of their claim, can do so online.

The process in brief

Claim Received – There are a few ways in which veteran consulting services or veterans themselves can file the disability claims. These can either be done online, or done on eBenefits, or the application can simply be mailed. No matter how you file for the claim you will get a confirmation from the authorities about the same.

Initial Review – A VSR or a Veterans Service Representative will go through the claim and check it for any discrepancies. During this stage, the VSR may ask for evidence from the veteran, government agencies, healthcare providers, or others, and review it all, before making an informed decision.

Notification – Once the decision has been made, the authorities get the entire claim decision packet ready to be mailed. This includes details of the decision on the claim and may take 7-10 business days to arrive.
