Active duty pay exclusion

Members of the armed services can exclude 100% of taxable active-duty military pay from state income tax, including Reserve and National Guard compensation. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation for survivors is also tax-free.

100% disabled veteran sales tax exemption

A related motor vehicle tax exemption applies to one vehicle in a consecutive three-year period.

Homestead property tax exemption

Veterans rated 100% disabled can claim a property tax exemption on their homestead, filed with Oklahoma Tax Commission Form 998.

Statewide sales tax is 4.5%, with local additions of up to 6.5%; the combined average is roughly 7.72%.

Recreation

Lifetime hunting & fishing licenses

Veterans with at least a 60% disability rating can buy a lifetime hunting and fishing license for $25; those rated below 60% pay $200. Active military personnel and their dependents pay resident rates, and the donor-funded Stars and Stripes License Project offers licenses to veterans.

Free state parks & museums

Honorably discharged veterans who are current Oklahoma residents receive free admission to all state-owned or state-operated parks and museums with valid ID and a DD214.

Oklahoma colleges may award academic credit to veterans honorably discharged in the previous three years for military training that meets American Council on Education or equivalent standards.

Tuition-free technology education

Tuition is waived at state-supported technology career center schools for veterans and for dependents of any Oklahoma veteran who was missing in action or a prisoner of war.

Before you apply

  • First-time applicants generally need a copy of their DD-214 or discharge paperwork — keep certified copies somewhere safe.
  • Most programs require a discharge under other than dishonorable conditions; a dishonorable or bad-conduct discharge may bar eligibility.
  • “Active service” has a specific definition for many programs — training periods don’t always count. When in doubt, ask the agency directly.
