Veteran benefits in Nevada

Nevada pairs one of the friendliest tax pictures in the country with park access, tuition help, and dedicated veterans facilities. Here's the terrain, category by category.

Financial benefits

No state income tax

Nevada does not levy a general state income tax on individuals, so military retirement pay, VA disability compensation, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, and Survivor Benefit Plan payments are not taxed at the state level — and no individual state return is required.

Property tax exemption

Wartime veterans may qualify for an exemption of roughly $2,000 of assessed valuation, applied to either property tax or the governmental services tax on a vehicle — one or the other, not both.

Sales tax picture

Statewide sales tax is 4.6%, with municipal additions of up to about 3.665%; the combined average is roughly 7.89%.

Recreation

Hunting & fishing license discounts

Veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 50% or higher are eligible for discounted hunting and fishing licenses.

State park entry

Veterans with a 10% or higher disability rating can receive free entrance to all Nevada state parks, camping, and boat launch facilities, with a low annual renewal fee.

Education programs

National Guard tuition support

Active Nevada National Guard members are eligible for fee waivers, and dependents of members killed in the line of duty can use education benefits within a ten-year window.

Grant-in-aid for surviving dependents

A financial grant that does not require repayment, available to dependents of Guard members killed in the line of duty while permanently stationed in Nevada.

Veteran housing

Nevada State Veterans Homes

The Nevada State Veterans Home at Boulder City provides skilled nursing care for honorably discharged veterans, with eligibility extending to spouses and Gold Star parents; fees run on a sliding scale.

Employment & job training

State hiring preference

Honorably discharged veterans receive 10 points added to passing state employment examination scores; surviving spouses receive 5 points. Qualified disabled veterans are guaranteed an interview.

USERRA protections

Federal law protects the civilian job rights and benefits of service members and reservists returning from duty.

Burials & memorials

State veterans cemeteries

Veterans receive a plot, vault, and opening/closing at no cost, with a small fee for spouses and dependents, at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley and the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.

Before you apply

  • First-time applicants generally need a copy of their DD-214 or discharge paperwork — keep certified copies somewhere safe.
  • Most programs require a discharge under other than dishonorable conditions; a dishonorable or bad-conduct discharge may bar eligibility.
  • “Active service” has a specific definition for many programs — training periods don’t always count. When in doubt, ask the agency directly.
