Financial benefits

No state income tax

Florida has no state income tax and no state retirement income tax, so military retirement pay and other retirement income are not taxed at the state level.

Disabled veteran property tax deduction

Honorably discharged veterans with at least a 10% disability rating receive up to a $5,000 deduction in the assessed value of their home; an unmarried surviving spouse can qualify after five years.

Homestead exemption for 100% disabled veterans

Veterans with a 100% rated service-connected, permanent and total disability who are permanent Florida residents on January 1 can receive a full homestead tax exemption, which can carry to a surviving spouse until they remarry, sell, or otherwise dispose of the property.

Combat-related discount at 65+

Veterans 65 or older with a permanent service-connected disability, at least part of which is combat-related, can receive a homestead property tax discount. A separate exemption applies for surviving spouses of service members who died from service-connected causes on active duty.

Real estate exemption for severely disabled veterans

Veterans who are paraplegic, hemiplegic, or permanently and totally disabled, legally blind, or who require a wheelchair may qualify for a real estate tax exemption if gross annual household income does not exceed the adjusted maximum.

Local business tax exemption

Veterans, their spouses, and spouses of active duty members can be exempt from local business taxes under Chapter 205 of the Florida business tax statutes.

Sales tax picture

The statewide rate is 6.0%, with local additions of up to 2.5%; the combined average is roughly 7.05%.

Recreation

State park passes

Honorably discharged veterans receive a 25% discount on an annual state park pass, and veterans with service-connected disabilities receive a free lifetime pass. Many county and municipal parks also offer free or reduced entrance passes to veterans, spouses, and active duty members.

Hunting & fishing licenses

Active duty and retired Florida residents can buy the Military Gold Sportsman's License for $20, and veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled receive a free five-year hunting and fishing license.

Purple Heart tuition waiver

Recipients of the Purple Heart or superior combat decorations receive a tuition and fee waiver at Florida public community colleges and state universities for 110% of the required credit hours.

High school diplomas for wartime veterans

The state awards a standard high school diploma to honorably discharged wartime veterans who did not complete high school.

Before you apply

  • First-time applicants generally need a copy of their DD-214 or discharge paperwork — keep certified copies somewhere safe.
  • Most programs require a discharge under other than dishonorable conditions; a dishonorable or bad-conduct discharge may bar eligibility.
  • “Active service” has a specific definition for many programs — training periods don’t always count. When in doubt, ask the agency directly.
